Wernicke's Square 2024
Performance, 40 min.
A performance in the public space of Givon Square. A group of performers leads the audience on a tour that focuses on listening and observing the square. Through games and speech actions, the performers translate what they see and hear in a way that draws attention to the small details of the surroundings. The performance consists of a set of rules and games that create communication on one hand, while embracing the disruption of communication as a means to reveal the sensory experience of hearing and seeing through words. The piece deals with the edge of the ability to listen and observe—between the precision that defines perceptual capacity and the creativity embedded in limitation.
Wernicke’s area in the brain is associated with the ability to understand words and speech. It holds memory of word sounds that helps identify spoken language. Damage to Wernicke’s area causes word deafness.
The performance includes an accessible version for blind and visually impaired audiences, integrated into the work itself—a built-in audio description performed by the artists.
